The Invisible Gatekeeper
We imagine there's someone standing at the entrance to every field, every craft, every business. Someone who checks credentials, verifies experience, decides who's qualified to enter.
This person doesn't exist.
The gatekeeper is a fiction we invented to justify our hesitation. It feels safer to say "I'm not ready yet" than to admit "I'm afraid to start."
But fear and readiness are different things. You'll never feel ready. Start anyway.
What Permission Looks Like
People wait for permission in different forms:
- A degree they think they need
- A certification no one will ask for
- Experience they can only get by doing the thing
- A mentor's blessing
- Enough savings to remove all risk
- The perfect idea

None of these are real prerequisites. They're delay tactics dressed up as preparation.
The Builders Who Didn't Wait
Every product I admire was built by someone who started before they were ready. They had questions they couldn't answer, skills they hadn't mastered, doubts they couldn't silence.
They started with gaps. They filled them as they went.
The alternative is waiting until conditions are perfect. Perfect conditions never arrive. The people who wait for them are still waiting.
What You Actually Need
Not permission. Just these:
**Curiosity** — enough interest to explore without knowing where it leads
**Willingness to be bad** — acceptance that your first attempts will be clumsy, and that's the price of entry
**A small step** — not a plan for the entire journey, just the next action
**Time** — stolen from somewhere else, because nothing happens without allocation
That's it. No credentials. No approval. No guarantee.
The Cost of Waiting
Every day you wait for permission is a day someone else is building. They're making mistakes you'll avoid, yes. But they're also learning lessons you'll have to learn later, with less time to recover.
The market doesn't care about your preparation. It cares about what you ship. And shipping requires starting.
How to Start Without Permission
Pick something small. Smaller than you think. The first step should feel almost too easy, because you're not trying to prove anything. You're just beginning.
Tell no one, or tell everyone. Either removes the need for external validation.
Set a deadline measured in hours, not weeks. Momentum favors speed.
Accept that your first output will be imperfect. That's not a flaw in the process. That is the process.
The Real Qualification
You know what actually qualifies you to do something? Doing it.
Not studying it. Not thinking about it. Not waiting until you're ready.
The doing itself creates the qualification. The first sale makes you a seller. The first post makes you a writer. The first line of code makes you a builder.
Everything before that is rehearsal.
Stop Waiting
No one will tap you on the shoulder. No email will arrive granting access. No certificate will suddenly make you feel prepared.
The permission you want doesn't exist because it was never required.
Start building. Start writing. Start selling. Start before you're ready, because ready is a moving target you'll never hit.
